Back in 2003 I began the process of creating eco friendly sandals made with hemp straps and pad and a recycled car tire sole. We got to the prototyping stage but were not happy with the results and the fact that they were made in China and we had no control over labor practices which are very often less than ethical in that part of the world. The project more or less died as the rapid growth of the Serf to Surf skin care line stole all my time away as I did my best to accommodate our growing retail and private label cliental.

A few months ago I had the pleasure of being introduced to Cliff Drill, a surfer and an entrepreneur based in San Diego, California. I was extremely impressed with his ethics, his genuine compassion for our eco system (in the surfer tradition) and his determination to create and offer great products at an affordable price.

I first contacted Cliff about private labeling SPLAFFS for Serf to Surf but you know, when someone has put the time, effort and dedication into a project that Cliff and his team have I sincerely believe that the credit belongs to them and them alone.
